What ultimately shapes the way the dance looks is the specific music and its instrumentation. All movement evolves in response to music. New movements and genres of dance emerge from the desire to illustrate a particular sound and rhythm.
A couple of months ago I was invited by Carneal Simmons Contemporary Art in Dallas to participate in their upcoming group exhibition entitled "Complicit," opening October 13th, 2018. Artists were invited to generate a response to one of the hot topics in our current political climate.

Musicality is a big topic on the tango path and requires years of dancing, watching, listening, questioning, and experimenting. For me it has been an intuitive, solitary journey since most of the information on musicality and music theory did not make sense to me for a long time. My first glimpse into understanding musicality happened when I became aware of being deeply moved by certain songs. I began to experience intense surges of emotions, images, and sensations in response to specific passages in the music. That was the beginning that made me ask the question (which has since become like a personal mantra) "What orchestra is this?"
Mr. Iyengar is known for saying that for the first eighteen years of yoga practice, one is considered a beginner. I remember how I felt when I first heard that. It was something like “oh, whatever, that’s ridiculous.” Now, seventeen years into my practice, I understand what he meant and why I wasn’t able to accept the truth of that until now...
As my birthday was approaching I started thinking about myself ten years ago. Anxiety, depression, self hatred, self abuse, lack of self esteem, zero confidence, loneliness, desperation. Those are the words that come up when I imagine myself at that time. It didn’t matter whether other people perceived me that way or not. No matter how many awards and scholarships I received, no matter how many diplomas I received, every achievement of every goal seemed to deepen my feeling of dissatisfaction in my life...
